Progress in SOC Development at Fraunhofer IKTS

After long and successful development history of Solid Oxide Cells (SOC) continuous improvement in performance, longevity, manufacturing, system integration it is necessary to bring this highly efficient technology the market. The activities on material optimization at IKTS are focused mainly enhancement durability for SOFC, SOEC, rSOC operation boosting power density. During recent years considerable efforts simplification automation cell stack manufacturing processes have been addressed. electrode adjusted high yield automated printing thin electrolytes with integrated quality control measures. Efficient ways reduction time energy consumption sealing process SOC stacks found demonstrated pilot production as well assembling components was shown. increasing interest “green hydrogen” created multiple opportunities SOEC be considered inherent part industrial chemical processes. pioneering work coupled module Fischer-Tropsch reactor provided first demonstration feasibility approach wax production. However, electrolysis applications (>10 MW) will need new approaches design put higher requirements durability.
